Apple Intelligence arrives with iOS 18.1 on October 28. Every iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 that updates gets Writing Tools, Priority Notifications, Smart Reply in Mail, Photo Cleanup, and improved Siri. For executives, three features matter most in the first month.
Writing Tools appears as a system-wide editing layer in any text field. Select text, tap Writing Tools, and choose from Proofread, Rewrite, Make Shorter, Make Longer, Friendly Tone, Professional Tone, or Summarize. It works in Mail, Messages, Notes, Slack, and every other app using a standard text input. No app integration required.
Priority Notifications ranks your lock screen by urgency. The feed stops being chronological and starts being a ranked action list. Time-sensitive items surface first.

Writing Tools: What Each Mode Does
- Proofread: Finds and fixes grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Accept changes as a batch or one at a time.
- Rewrite: Produces an alternative version of the selected text. Useful when the draft exists but the phrasing is not right.
- Make Shorter / Make Longer: Condenses or expands selected text while preserving meaning. Make Shorter is the mode executives will use most.
- Friendly / Professional Tone: Adjusts the register. Professional tone removes casual language. Friendly tone adds warmth to overly formal messages.
- Summarize: Converts selected text to a brief summary. Works on long email threads in Mail.
Priority Notifications: How It Works
Priority Notifications is enabled by default with iOS 18.1. Apple Intelligence learns which notifications are time-sensitive based on content and your interaction patterns. For the first week, the system is learning -- interacting with time-sensitive notifications immediately helps calibrate the ranking. The feature does not filter or delete notifications. It reorders them.
The 15-Minute Setup Sequence
- Install iOS 18.1. Settings > General > Software Update. Allow 20 minutes for download and installation.
- Enable Apple Intelligence. Setup runs automatically after installation. Confirm opt-in for each feature category.
- Test Writing Tools immediately. Open Notes, type a paragraph, select it, and tap Writing Tools. Run Proofread and Make Shorter to see the feature in action.
- Configure Smart Reply. Open Mail, find a recent email, and observe the Smart Reply suggestions. Reply to one using a suggestion to calibrate how it works for your style.
- Check Priority Notifications that evening. After a full day of notifications, review the lock screen order. Note whether the priority ranking matches your judgment.
Privacy: Writing Tools and Priority Notifications run entirely on-device for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 (A17/A18 chips). No query content leaves your device for these features. For features requiring Private Cloud Compute, Apple's architecture is specifically designed so Apple cannot access your query content. Independent security researchers can audit the server code.
