Setup (One-Time, 5 Minutes)

Define your competitive monitoring scope. List your top 3-5 direct competitors, your top 2-3 industry news sources, and your top 2-3 topics relevant to your market. Save this as a text snippet to paste into ChatGPT each morning.

Configure Custom Instructions in ChatGPT (Settings > Custom Instructions): add your role, company, competitors, and market description. With Custom Instructions set, you do not need to paste the context block each day.

Daily Execution (8-10 Minutes)

• Open ChatGPT Plus or Team and confirm Search is active (search icon visible and enabled).
• Paste the context block and Prompt 1 below. Submit.
• Review the output (3-4 minutes). For anything flagged as requiring attention, use Prompt 2 for an implications analysis.
• Note any items that require internal communication or a strategic response before your first meeting.

PROMPT 1 (Daily Briefing): "Search the web for developments from the past 24 hours related to: Competitors: [list your 3-5 competitors] Topics: [list your 2-3 market topics] Format: Competitor Updates: [one bullet per competitor; 'No significant updates' if nothing found] Market Developments: [2-3 bullets on relevant market/industry news] What Requires Attention: [flag any item requiring an internal discussion or external response] Be specific. Include source and date for each item. Skip routine product announcements with no competitive significance." PROMPT 2 (Implications Analysis -- for flagged items): "[Competitor] just announced [development]. Our current positioning is [brief description]. Analyze: 1. What this means for us in the next 90 days 2. Whether it changes our messaging, roadmap priorities, or sales approach 3. What we should communicate to our team and when Be direct. One paragraph per point."

Weekly Synthesis (Friday, 5 Additional Minutes)

Once per week, ask: "Based on the competitive developments from the past 7 days, identify: (1) the single most significant development affecting our competitive position, (2) any trends appearing across multiple competitors, (3) one question we should be able to answer but currently cannot." This weekly synthesis provides the content for competitive updates in team or board communications without requiring a dedicated research effort.
