ChatGPT now has three tiers with real differences in data privacy, admin controls, and usage limits. Here is the feature-by-feature comparison for executives making a plan decision.
Key points
- The Migration Path: From Plus to Team
What You'll Learn
- The exact feature differences between ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise
- Which plan fits which organization profile, with specific criteria for each decision
- The migration path from individual Plus accounts to a managed Team workspace
An IT director at a 50-person professional services firm gets a request from three different department heads in the same week: one wants to expense ChatGPT Plus, one wants volume pricing, and one is asking whether it is safe to put client data into ChatGPT. All three are asking different questions that have the same answer: they need the Team plan.
As of January 10, 2024, ChatGPT has three distinct plans with meaningfully different capabilities. The right choice depends on four variables: team size, data sensitivity, management requirements, and budget. This article maps each plan to each use case so the decision is clear.

ChatGPT Plus -- $20/user/month
Individual power users
Model access: GPT-4, GPT-4 Turbo, DALL-E 3, Advanced Data Analysis, Browsing.
Data handling: By default, OpenAI may use conversations to train its models. Users can opt out in Settings, but this requires individual action per account and is not centrally enforced.
Admin controls: None. Each account is individually owned. If a team member leaves, their ChatGPT history and GPTs go with their personal account.
Best for: Individual contributors and executives using ChatGPT for personal productivity tasks that do not involve sensitive company content.
ChatGPT Team -- $25/user/month (annual) or $30/month
Teams of 2+ using ChatGPT for work
Data privacy (key difference): ChatGPT does NOT train on Team workspace conversations. Automatic, not opt-in. No individual action required.
Admin console: Add/remove team members, monitor usage, configure workspace-level settings. Central management replaces shared credentials.
GPT-4 limits: Approximately 2x Plus limits. Power users who hit the hourly cap regularly will notice this immediately.
Best for: Teams of 2-20 using ChatGPT for business tasks involving any internal, client, or strategic content.
ChatGPT Enterprise -- Custom pricing (typically $60+/user/month)
20+ users, regulated industries, compliance requirements
Usage limits: Zero usage caps. GPT-4 with the highest available context window. No rate limiting interruptions.
Compliance: SOC 2 Type 2 documentation available. Custom data retention policies including zero-retention. SAML SSO support. For legal, healthcare, and financial services, this documentation is required for procurement approval.
Best for: Organizations above 20 seats, regulated industries requiring compliance documentation, and organizations where AI downtime creates measurable business disruption.
The Migration Path: From Plus to Team
- Identify current Plus users: Email the team asking who has ChatGPT Plus. Check expense reports. The count is usually higher than IT expects.
- Designate a workspace admin: Typically the Chief of Staff, IT Director, or most engaged executive AI user. They own the admin console and shared GPT library.
- Create the Team workspace: Go to chat.openai.com, select "Upgrade to Team" under the account menu, complete billing setup.
- Migrate team members: Existing Plus subscribers cancel their individual subscriptions when they join Team. Note: Plus conversation history does not transfer. This is a fresh start.
- Build the shared GPT library in week one: The main value unlock of the Team plan is the shared workspace. Build 3-5 GPTs relevant to your team's recurring tasks before the full team is migrated.
Bottom Line
If your team uses ChatGPT for work tasks: Team plan, today. Regulated industry or above 20 seats: Enterprise. Individual Plus accounts are for individual use cases only. The data privacy default in the Team plan is the most underappreciated feature in the January 10 launch. Most executives do not know their Plus conversations may be used to train OpenAI's models. Team fixes that automatically.
