What You'll Learn
- How Copilot's Teams chat summarization works for channel and private threads
- The weekly digest workflow that surfaces decisions, action items, and open questions
- How to configure Copilot to generate the exact summary format your team needs
Executive visibility into team conversations has always required either direct participation (time-consuming) or summary from a direct report (indirect and filtered). Copilot in Teams creates a third option: a direct AI-generated summary of any Teams channel or chat thread, surfacing decisions made, action items assigned, and open questions still needing resolution.
A weekly digest of every relevant channel -- produced in 5 minutes on Friday morning -- replaces ad hoc status check-ins and provides a more complete picture than any single report can offer. Requires Microsoft 365 Copilot license ($30/user/month).
Without this workflow: reading or scrolling through active channels to stay current takes 30-60 minutes per week. With this workflow: 5-10 minutes for the same coverage, with better structure.

The Weekly Team Digest Workflow
Setup (one-time, 10 minutes): Identify the five to eight Teams channels most relevant to your role. Open each channel and confirm Copilot access is active (Copilot icon visible). Create a recurring Friday morning calendar block: "Team Digest -- Copilot" (15 minutes).
- Weekly execution: Open each relevant channel and click the Copilot icon at the top.
- Ask Copilot to summarize the past seven days using the prompt below.
- Review each summary. For anything requiring your attention, respond directly or create a follow-up task.
- Optional: paste all summaries into a Copilot Page for a consolidated weekly view across all channels.
Summarize the conversations in this channel from the past 7 days. Use this format: Decisions Made: [3 bullet points maximum, stating what was decided and who decided it] Action Items: [3 bullet points maximum, stating the task, owner, and due date if mentioned] Open Questions: [3 bullet points maximum, stating the question and who raised it] Key Context: [2 bullet points maximum, background needed to understand the above] If a category has nothing to report, write "None this week." Do not include informal chat or social conversation.
For Executives with an EA
The workflow extends naturally: Copilot surfaces and classifies, you review in 5 minutes, your EA handles follow-up on action items from delegated channels. The EA gets a context-complete briefing from the Copilot summary rather than a raw channel thread, which makes delegation significantly faster and more accurate.
